How do you align the cam shaft and the crank shaft?

Say you are rebiulding an engine or when changing a timing belt you lose your positioning, how do you figure out how to set the cam and crank shaft in sync?

get a chiltons manual for your vehicle

Each particular vehicle has marks, dots or arrows which must be aligned with the cam sprocket and crankshaft damper. This is true of timing chains as well as timing belts.
This is a critical adjustment because misalignment can cause serious engine damage on many vehicles which aren’t free wheeling (which means the valves can smash into the pistons if the adjustment isn’t correct).

The piston needs to be at top dead center number one and both valves need to be closed. What type of engine are you rebuilding, that will make a big difference as to the correct specifications. All engines have some type of timing marks, you will need to find the right ones for your engine.

Go to an auto parts house and ask on the type and size of engine you are working on. Get the specs. A auto repair manual will also tell you the specs on how to time cam to the crank. Then be careful to follow the instructions. Some Hi Tech engines have two over head cams and need special tools to time the cams. Some engines you cant rotate the engine, it will cause the valves to hit the top of the pistons and will bend the valves. My suggestion is to buy a motor manual and read up on it. Then if you do not understand parts of the operation ask questions. Good luck

All of the answers before mine are correct. But my advice is… If you didn’t know the answer to this question yourself then you shouldn’t attempt to set the timing… take it to a certified mechanic.

also if it is a interference engine you can damage valves
